Flood Risk Schemes (FRS)
Helping alleviate flooding at regional and national levels
When developing and delivering a flood relief scheme, our team of engineering and environmental experts provide consulting services and advice across all stages of the scheme lifecycle. We collaborate across our broad pool of experts to conduct surveys/investigations and analysis (hazard mapping, hydrological and geomorphological studies) to fully understand flooding and its impacts on the environment, on landform, on ecology and on society and explore impacts, resilience and trends. Sustainable FRS solutions require a detailed understanding of flood risk management through consideration of both structural and non-structural flood alleviation measures. All potential options require a rigorous assessment of their technical and environmental aspects including cost-benefit analysis and suitability for adaption to climate change. We consider the entire scheme lifecycle to ensure that the operational and maintenance requirements are given adequate attention. At ByrneLooby, our team has decades of experience in developing and assessing flood relief measures that are both robust and sustainable.
Our consultants offer expertise spanning all phases:
- Feasibility/preliminary design
- Contract procurement and project management
- Environmental assessment & planning
- Detailed design of Flood Relief Scheme (FRS)
- Stakeholder communications, engagement and consultation
- Construction supervision and handover - Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) and works verification
Public and stakeholder consultation is a key component for the successful delivery of a flood relief scheme. This includes liaisons with statutory bodies and citizens either directly affected by flooding or impacted by the proposed solutions for flood alleviation. Most flood relief schemes will require planning permission either from the Local Authority or An Bord Pleanála through the Planning and Development Regulations and/or the Arterial Drainage Acts. The planning process has become significantly more challenging in recent years and ByrneLooby has met this challenge through attention to detail to ensure proposals are compatible with the relevant legislation. Our flood relief schemes strive to combine resilient engineering with minimal environmental impacts and numerous community benefits. Buildability is another key consideration that ByrneLooby addresses at all stages of the scheme development ensuring flood relief measures can be delivered with minimal risks to successful completion.
We have delivered multiple flood relief schemes throughout Ireland, building experience across a portfolio of challenging catchments. These include;
Arklow Flood Defence Scheme
Bandon Flood Relief Scheme
Tipperary Flood Relief Schemes
