Dargle Flood Defence Scheme

Dargle Flood Defence Scheme

The River Dargle rises in the Wicklow Mountains, falls over Powerscourt Waterfall, and enters the Irish Sea at Bray Harbour. As the river has historically been a repeated cause of flooding in Bray and the surrounding lowlands, the River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme was implemented to protect hundreds of properties in County Wicklow from future flood damage. The €46m scheme was officially opened in October 2017.

Our Role

Ayesa was appointed by Wicklow County Council, on behalf of the Office of Public Works (OPW) to provide detailed design and tender documentation for this scheme. In seeking to provide the best value, and in order to integrate with the existing infrastructure, a range of construction options were chosen. These included earth embankments, piled walls, concrete walls and scour protected slopes. We also designed a solution for underpinning and deepening the channel at Bray Bridge as part of a previous phase of this project.
