AL Zour Refinery

AL Zour Refinery

KNPC is developing a new refinery at Al Zour, in the southern part of Kuwait. Van Oord carried out the €500M EPC site preparation and Ground Improvement Contract. The contract consists of the dredging and reclamation of 65M m3 of sand, approximately 16 sq. km of ground consolidation and raising the levels to approximately 2m above sea level in preparation for the main works contract.

AL Zour Refinery

Our Role

ByrneLooby were employed to provide independent full-time geotechnical supervision for the site preparation and ground improvement works. The brief included independent assessment of the ground improvement design, supervision of all geotechnical instrumentation installation, verification of instrumentation monitoring and verification of the performance of improvement measures by situ field testing (e.g. CPT’s, dynamic probing, sand replacement). ByrneLooby also monitored specification compliance and verification of full-scale zone load testing.

Our Role

Engagement

The independent ground improvement supervision responsibilities involved stakeholder engagement with the client KNPC, PMC Engineer AMEC, the ground improvement contractor Menard as well as our client, van Oord. ByrneLooby was ultimately responsible for the sign off and approval of 16km2 of challenging ground improvement works to meet an exacting performance specification for this mega-project in southern Kuwait.
