Sirius Minerals is developing the North Yorkshire Polyhalite Project to extract polyhalite ore from the mineral deposit and to transport the ore for processing and export. The Project includes the mine site development including the mine shafts, a 38km tunnel to the processing facilities located on Teesside and facilities to bulk load the processed materials onto ships. The first phase of tunnelling is the design and build of a section of tunnel south of the Wilton site to the first intermediate site at Lockwood Beck.
The tunnel portal at the north end of the site is at Wilton. ByrneLooby provided the detailed design for the embedded retaining walls for the tunnel portal, tension piles in the base slab, temporary props and waling for ground support including detailed design of connections and supports, capping beams, temporary base slab and ground anchors for temporary propping for a section of the wall. ByrneLooby also designed the drainage blanket, sumps and drainage channel.
