St. Leonard’s Mayfield School, East Sussex

St. Leonard’s Mayfield School, East Sussex

St. Leonard’s Mayfield School in East Sussex is a Grade I listed building. This 14th Century building situated within an outstanding area of beauty, was originally the Old Palace of Mayfield which was restored in 1864. Development of the school continued throughout the late 1800’s up until the second half of the 20th Century, where a concert hall and a suite of other facilities were constructed and added to the building.

Our Role

Our team of experts in ByrneLooby London were invited by Pitman Tozer Architects to carry out a structural survey of St Leonard’s School in Mayfield. This scheme involved the conversion, reconfiguration and refurbishment of an existing dormitory within the Grade I listed building to create a new state of the art sixth form centre whilst remaining sympathetic to the historic fabric of the school. The new space comprises of an entrance hall/exhibition space, a conference room, a new library, classrooms, study rooms, offices and a series of social spaces. The project involved the unpicking of years of insensitive works to the original building fabric, to create a series of well-proportioned rooms and to reveal some previously hidden stained glass windows. Other works included new double glazed units, major re-roofing and landscaping.
