The Scunthorpe Landfill consists of 2 major landfill facilities over 70 Hectares (9 million m3). Works included closure and remediation of an asbestos tip, capping and closure of non-landfill directive compliant cells.
Design, regulatory support and construction support to modernise and make PPC compliant the complex of landfills and industrial sludge lagoons operated by Tata Steel at their Scunthorpe site. This involved remediation and closure of existing landfill areas and the design and construction of new landfills.
Extensive site investigations were conducted and detailed geotechnical and hydrogeological studies undertaken. These underpinned two major PPC Permit applications and subsequent PPC/EPR Permit variations. The works were all supported by a risk based design process as per Environment Agency guidance, quantitative HRA’s, LFGRA’s and SRA’s
• Preparation of operational plans and environmental monitoring plans;
• Design of leachate collection and management systems. Design of infrastructure (roads, weighbridges, cabins, surface water lagoons);
• Preparation of contract specifications, full tendering and procurement support;
• Construction supervision and CQA;
• Design and supervision of construction of gas, leachate management, surface water management and extensive environmental monitoring regime.
