New Children’s Hospital

New Children’s Hospital

The New Children’s Hospital in Dublin will both consolidate and modernise paediatric hospital care for the Greater Dublin Area and transform tertiary care for children and young people for the whole country. The €1.4bn building project is the largest and most expensive in the history of the state and is scheduled to be completed in 2022. The hospital will provide 380 individual inpatient rooms, each with a parent bed, 93 day-care beds, 22 operating theatres and a 53-unit family accommodation facility,1000 car parking spaces, as well as four acres of outdoor gardens and courtyards. BAM Ireland are the main contractors for the project and commenced enabling works on site in late 2016. The development includes a double and triple level basement to the full footprint of the site below the buildings. The foundation piling works were undertaken by PJ Edwards & Co. Ltd.

Our Role

Ayesa in Dublin worked closely with our clients (PJ Edwards and BAM) from the tender stage providing consultancy services covering design methodology, monitoring, and detailed design of the secant pile wall (approximately 960m in length) and temporary support to the wall during construction. To facilitate installation of drainage and services, excavation depths up to 14m and 16m bgl have been accounted for in the temporary case. In the permanent case, retained heights range from 9m to 12m. Our designs had to meet tight movement criteria and we proposed a real time instrumentation system to ensure that the works had no adverse impact on adjacent sensitive structures and the live LUAS light rail line.

Our Role

Services Required

Ayesa were engaged by BAM to provide the construction sequencing and structural design of temporary works including the Guidance on construction methodology to minimise ground movements of the adjacent residential properties, Design of 5 No. TBM launch and reception shafts (9m to 12m deep) to install 1.45m diameter sewers. Detailed design of permanent RC liner wall and capping beam to provide the permanent waterproofing protection to the basement, Ground settlement predictions due to micro-tunnelling, Design of piling platforms including slope stability assessment on steep slopes, Guidance on wayleave access permission to install temporary tie back anchors, vibration monitoring of LUAS light rail tracks running parallel to basement excavation, Assessment of open cut excavations during the bulk excavation phase, Foundation pile design, Design of temporary retaining wall to facilitate construction of underground utility tunnel. We addressed our client’s requirements for economical solutions by using our strong technical background in deliverance of efficient solutions that are projected to achieve considerable cost and programme savings.
