Ma'ameer Bridge Flushing Assessment

MAAMEER BRIDGE FLUSHING ASSESSMENT 1

Tubli Bay and Ma'ameer Bay are situated in the coastal waters between Sitra and Isa Town. Both are historically and environmentally important regions in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In fact, the combined system is an area of international importance for migratory bird species and mangrove wetlands. The Ministry of Works Municipalities and Urban Planning intends to widen the Sheikh Jaber A. Al Subah (SJAS) Highway crossing at the northern entrance of Ma'ameer Bay.

MAAMEER BRIDGE FLUSHING ASSESSMENT 1

Our Role

To accommodate this widening and maintain flow through the system, ByrneLooby was appointed to investigate the feasibility of modifying the existing culverts/bridge in several configurations by undertaking a flushing assessment of Ma'ameer Bay. Further flushing enhancement techniques were assessed downstream through bay deepening or widening the southern entrance. The combined influence was investigated by conducting an iterative assessment for changing variables, arriving at the optimum environmental and cost-effective solution.

A flushing assessment, using DHI MIKE software, was undertaken to measure the flows for various scenarios, which included a combination of the bridge/culvert configurations and downstream modifications which considered deepening and/or widening the southern channel.

The combined influence of the bridge/culvert configurations and downstream modifications was investigated by conducting an iterative assessment of changing variables, arriving at the optimum environmental & cost-effective solution.
The optimal solution involved expanding the existing number of culverts at the bridge crossing, including additional flap gates as well as widening of the southern entrance channel of Ma'ameer Bay.
