A multi-national construction company appointed Ayesa to provide design and environmental consultancy support for the first phase of a £30 million contract to remediate a former landfill site in Merseyside. The land was to be remediated to develop residential housing and associated infrastructure. The NEC3 design and build contract was led by Liverpool City Council (LCC). The development site has a long and complex history of infilling for over 70 years and held several challenges, including hazardous landfill gases and unsettled ground. In addition, the fill materials posed risks for local groundwater and surface water receptors.

Our Role

The first stage of the land remediation project was to review site information provided by the LCC and determine whether we needed further data and assessments. Our team recommended a pilot remediation trial and managed its implementation.

Our scope included:
• Excavating and processing 1000 tons of waste
• Determining the amount & type of recovered materials in the excavation work
• Confirming the quality of residual soils, which would guide the ground engineering

Our Geotechnical team carried out additional ground investigations and ground gas monitoring. Phase 2 included the earthworks design of the replacement engineered fill and outlined measures to control landfill gas, a crucial step in enabling safe, residential housing development. In addition, we conducted quantitative modelling of predicted settlement’s and made surcharge recommendations to mitigate future settlement. As a condition of the pre-planning phase, we provided groundwater and ground gas risk assessments to secure regulatory approval from the environment agency to treat any excavated wastes.
