Liverpool 2 Phase 2

Liverpool2 Phase 2

Peel Ports Liverpool 2 project is a £400 million investment to create a new deep-water container terminal at the Port of Liverpool. The latest phase (Phase 2) includes the installation of three ship to shore cranes (STS) and ten cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes (CRMG). These add to the previous five STS cranes and 12 CRMG cranes installed as part of Phase 1 which was opened in November 2016. Liverpool 2 will have the capacity to manage the unloading of two 380m vessels simultaneously. The terminal has also gained the most advanced quayside to HGV automated transfer technology in Europe.

McLaughlin & Harvey secured the contract to construct the Phase 2 container terminal, and employed Ayesa to provide Civil, Structural and Geotechnical design for the scheme of this D&B contract.

Our Role

Ayesa was appointed as the designer for all structural, civil and geotechnical works. These works included; structural design of a six-meter high and 160m long wind wall, structural foundations for 52 container bays and six reefer bays, two gantry crane rail and ancillary structures, six steel frame reefer gantries with four levels, 1.8km of machine guard fencing and gates, new substation structural foundations, civil works for the mechanical and electrical installations, approx. 1.5km of terminal road pavements including swept path analysis, surface water drainage system with soakaway drainage and fire and potable water mains.

Ayesa also provided detailed geotechnical characterisation of the site which included significant deposits of dredged fill, buried spoils and an old quay structure that traversed the site. These issues significantly complicated civil and structural design elements on the site.
