Hinkley Tower Bases

Hinkley Tower Bases1

Balfour Beatty was awarded the installation of the pile groups and piles for the T-Pylon Bases for the South Section of the Hinkley Point to Seabank 400 kV Overhead Line Project. The 15km long route is located between Puriton which is just to the North of Bridgewater, and Biddisham which is just to the South of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. ByrneLooby was appointed as their geotechnical design consultants.

Our Role

ByrneLooby were responsible for the geotechnical design of pile groups and piles for the foundations of the new T-Pylon Overhead Lines. The new T-Pylon design is the first new pylon design in nearly 100 years according to the National Grid. The design required analysis of various load combinations to determine the pile type, configuration and base sizes to be adopted.

Innovation

Much of the route involved soft soils overlying rock which presented challenges to the design. As part of the solution, non-linear stiffness analysis was used in the pile group analysis to determine an efficient solution for the client in regards to the pile solution and pile cap sizes.

Once piling works had started, we worked with the client to refine soil parameters based on the results of static load testing on site. These refinements enabled improved buildability on site, as well as material and programme savings.
