Guildford Sands

Guildford Sands

Guildford Sands Tunnel passes under St Catherine's hill between the stations of Guildford and Shalford. During the Christmas period of 2019, a landslide resulted in the closure of the line whilst emergency remediation works were undertaken. The tunnel runs adjacent to St Catherine's chapel making it a site of archaeological importance.

Our Role

ByrneLooby were approached by Geoffery Osborne ltd to provide a design to prevent landslides on this section of track from impacting trains. We coordinated with BAM Ritchies who implemented our design. Our role as designer involved producing geotechnical models to ensure the slope was stabilised to a Eurocode compliant design. Byrnelooby also designed flank walls either side of the tunnel portal as part of the remediation. ByrneLooby also acted as temporary designer throughout the project integrating these designs around the permanent works.

Innovation

ByrneLooby responded within 48 hours after the landslide using rope access techniques to assess the risk of a further landslide in the short term. ByrneLooby's ability to use rope access and literally take a hands-on approach lead to a much increased understanding of the failure mechanisms, and therefore an efficient design than would have otherwise been apparent using conventional techniques. It also lead to the discovery of archaeological carvings that would not have been recorded if not for ByrneLooby's inspection.
