Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub

Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub

ByrneLooby provided full civil and structural design services for a new leisure facility on this Thames-side site in Walton-on-Thames. It comprises an eight-lane athletics track, two full-size all-weather football pitches, practice pitches, a clubhouse and grandstand. The work was undertaken for Elmbridge Borough Council as a design and build contract with Willmott Dixon under the iESE framework. The scheme was submitted for planning in February 2015 with construction completed in the summer of 2017.

Design

ByrneLooby designed the new clubhouse with a braced steel frame supporting the roof and precast first floor. Foundations are driven piles taken through filled ground to the underlying London Clay. The facility is built on the site of a former gravel pit backfilled as an uncontrolled tip. Ground improvement was used for the sports area and comprised excavation, sorting and replacing soils to provide a stable base for the track. Surface water is attenuated in a drainage layer beneath the track and pitches before discharging to the Thames.
