East Sitra Sewage Treatment Plant EIA

East Sitra Sewage Treatment Plant EIA

The Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain is planning to develop East Sitra as a national housing community as part of Bahrain’s National Economic Strategy for 2030. To support this development, sanitary works were required to meet the current and future expected demand. To do this, The Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning (MOWMAUP, the Project Proponent) is proposing to construct a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in East Sitra.

The proposed East Sitra STP and associated marine outfall is to be located on the East Sitra reclamation on the north-eastern coastline of Bahrain. It is to be located on Plot 1 of the East Sitra Housing Development, a proposed community housing scheme which will house an estimated 3,839 new villas.

The STP site encompasses an area of approximately 100,000m2 on existing reclaimed land.

Our Role

ByrneLooby undertook a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) including a stakeholder scoping session, an Environmental Scoping Report (ESR), an Environmental Evaluation Report (EER), and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for operation and construction.

As part of the EER, ByrneLooby conducted various baseline studies including marine ecological surveys, water quality studies, noise monitoring, social impact studies, air quality monitoring, odour dispersion modelling, as well as 3D hydrodynamic dispersion modelling. The hydrodynamic modelling was also used to decide on the location of the outfall.

Based on the studies and environmental legislation and guidelines, ByrneLooby developed an EER and EMP to assess the potential impacts of the proposed STP: we outlined mitigation measures and best practices to minimise any negative impacts.
