Diyar Al Muharraq – Fish Farm

4. Environment

The environmental team at Ayesa Middle East were commissioned to undertake a feasibility study to explore opportunities for creating a facility for rearing fish within the internal channels of the Diyar Al Muharraq development, a 12km2 reclamation in Bahrain. The reclamation of the site was completed in 2015 and topside development is currently progressing. Within the reclamation, a number of channels have been retained for waterfront development. The developer is seeking to increase fish numbers in these channels to to promote environmental and recreational benefit.

Our Role

Ayesa undertook the feasibility study to examine options to promote the growth of fish species in the channels in terms of species, sources, methods of retaining the fish, likely mortality rates along with a high level costing to provide an overall cost benefit analysis for each proposed methodology. In order to enhance the marine habitat cinder blocks were placed to create an artificial reef for fish. A fish release was carried out after the determination of the most suitable area within the channels.

Further Work

The outcome of the study indicated the need for enhancing the existing habitat within the channels to provide food and shelter for fish. The option of releasing fish fry into the channels is also being considered in consultation with the Marine Resources Directorate. Ayesa are currently collaborating with the promoter to provide this habitat enhancement in order to optimise fish species and numbers within the site.
