Bahrain International Airport - Access Improvement Scheme

Bahrain International Airport - Access Improvement Scheme

The Ministry of Works Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning (MOWMUP), Road Planning and Design Directorate (RPDD) are
undertaking works to improve the overall access to the Bahrain International Airport (BIA) under the Airport Modernisation
Programme (AMP). The BIA access improvements involve the upgrading of major intersections, the addition of ramps (within
airport), widening of a bridge and highway, and the development of a new flyover (requiring a reclamation platform) to improve
access to the airport around the culturally and environmentally sensitive Arad Bay area.

Bahrain International Airport - Access Improvement Scheme

Our Role

ByrneLooby was commissioned by Arcadis (the designer) to undertake the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) including an Environmental Scoping Report (ESR), an Environmental Evaluation Report (EER), and Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) in an extremely culturally and environmentally sensitive area in Arad Bay.

As part of the EER, ByrneLooby conducted various baseline studies including marine ecological surveys, water quality studies, noise monitoring, landscape and visual impact studies, culture and heritage impact assessment, air quality monitoring, as well as 3D hydrodynamic flushing modelling.

Based on the studies and environmental legislation and guidelines, ByrneLooby developed an EER and EMP to assess the potential impacts of the proposed STP an suggest mitigation measures and best practices to minimize the effect of any negative impacts.

Our Role

Innovation / Value Add

To assess the wider and cumulative impacts of the Project upon the sensitive bay area, ByrneLooby conducted additional 3D hydrodynamic flushing modelling on behalf of the Client to determine how future planned reclamations in the surrounding area outside of the project scope may affect the local hydrodynamics and water exchange to the mangroves. This ensures that a longer-term impact was accounted for, as well as those short-term construction phase impacts.
