Al Mirfa

Al Mirfa

ByrneLooby was appointed by Pioneer Engineering Consultancy to undertake the design of a 4.4km artificial beach and the associated beach control structures at Al Mirfa beach in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The ultimate client, Abu Dhabi Housing Authority (ADHA), intend to develop a complete urban Emirati residential neighbourhood, therefore the control structures were designed in such a way as to ensue minimal impact aesthetically whilst ensuring the beach design met international design standards.

Al Mirfa

Design

The design included a period of data collection and analysis followed by the hydrodynamic modelling studies which comprised a hydrodynamic (HD) model to determine the water levels and currents, a spectral wave (SW) model to determine the wave climate at the site and a flushing study to assess the water exchange across the site. The beach design included a beach stability and coastal evolution assessment to determine the construction profile and eventual stable profile and orientation of the 4.4km artificial beach.
