GE Plus Ground Engineering Awards 2022  - Rising Star Award Finalist

GE Plus Ground Engineering Awards 2022  - Rising Star Award Finalist

Meet Jack Green - Senior Engineer

Rising Star Award: Jack is a Finalist in the Rising Star Award category of the 2022 Ground Engineering Awards, which will take place next week on 6 September in London. This category is open to UK-based geotechnical/geo-environmental engineers with up to five years of industry experience who have shown innovative thinking and business acumen and have made a significant contribution to a project or demonstrated technical ability through research. Sixty judges will judge the shortlisted candidates on their all-around abilities.

About Jack:
Jack is a Senior Engineer at our Guildford Office and has four and a half years in the industry. Graduating with a Master's in Engineering Geology in 2017, Jack spent two years with XEIAD as an Assistant Engineer assisting with infrastructure examinations. In 2019, He led investigations for the ByrneLooby/Ayesa team on Runcorn Bridge and the M25 critical infrastructure packages. As a result of his hard work, creativity and initiative, ByrneLooby promoted Jack to Design Engineer within nine months.

Jack is highly flexible and creative when working on complex designs and collaborates with enthusiasm with his fellow Senior Engineers to develop practical solutions. He has used his head for heights and his rope access training to access and inspect site areas that are classed as inaccessible, which has often helped to alter the direction of projects.

Proactive Initiatives:
Jack takes a proactive approach to his role and has introduced several new initiatives/ideas that have helped his team, and he has participated in critical projects, delivering value and impact beyond the brief, with an eye on sustainability.

Examples of these include:

  • Sketch Template: He created a sketch template in PowerPoint based on the design of existing branded drawings, which brings consistent, quality sketching to his team and helps builds brand recognition.

  • Team Planner: The team planner is vital to any project, programme and delivery. Jack took on responsibility for the planner, transferring it to a shared server and linking it to Outlook Teams, making it up-to-date, accessible and trackable. This planner enables managers to edit the workloads of their sub-teams throughout the week.

  • Site bags: Jack created a high-vis anti-entanglement bag that holds any equipment needed for site visits, and it is now available for his team members to use, which improves Health & Safety for everyone on the team.

  • "Design Risk Assessment" template: Jack collaborated with the QSHE department to develop a standardised "Design Risk Assessment" template for our seven UK offices.

  • Journey planner app: Jack has created an app that replaces a word form that had previously been printed and signed. This initiative enables team members to input journey, work and required rest times, increases accessibility, reduces completion time and eliminates paper. This app is being adopted company-wide.
