ByrneLooby Shortlisted for Ground Engineering Award 2020

ByrneLooby Shortlisted for Ground Engineering Award 2020

Technical excellence is at the heart of everything we do at ByrneLooby.   We are delighted to announce our Temporary Works/Geotechnics project at the £150m Earls Gate Energy Centre has been shortlisted for The Ground Engineering Excellence Awards 2020.

The Earls Gate Energy Centre is a new energy recovery facility at Grangemouth, Scotland. The new plant will replace an existing gas-fired facility and will provide heat and power for industrial plants and export any surplus electricity to the National Grid. The plant will become one of the most efficient in the UK, helping to shift from fossil fuels to heat and electricity from renewable sources.

The development site of the new energy centre is situated 35 metres underground, where soft clay was posing problems for the deep bunker excavation. ByrneLooby was appointed by the contractor CNIM to develop a successful temporary excavation scheme so that permanent works construction could commence. Our role involved creating an analytical model and continuous monitoring and site observation regime, which guided the schemes’ construction sequence, allowing it to be adapted as they progressed further.  Our construction sequence methodology expediated the bunker excavation for the contractor and ensured the construction difficulties were overcome. There are some interesting projects alongside our category, 'UK Project with a Value between £1M and £3M'.

Congratulations to the team at ByrneLooby Guildford on their solution – we wish you all the best for the awards!
