Andy is particularly interested in challenging geotechnical conditions including soft ground engineering and geotechnical design in seismic areas. He lead ByrneLooby design teams for the Aqaba Port project, this project involved the development of infrastructure at Jordan's only seaport and entailed geotechnical design in a seismic area. Andy was also the lead designer for the King Abdulaziz International Airport GSE Tunnel in Jeddah, this design required a complex permanent dewatering solution for the area. Another of his notable projects is the Naval Jetty at the port on Umm Qasr in Iraq, this pier and sea wall was constructed on very soft alluvial silts requiring complex analysis, the design was reviewed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Andy has lead design teams on large rail and highways schemes and has presented on "The Role of Geotechnical Temporary Works on Infrastructure Construction in Ireland" at the Geotechnics on Irish Roads, 2000 - 2010 Conference.
