Progress on Lusail Expressway

Dec 17, 2013

The Lusail Expressway will deliver a modern road network to meet future traffic demands in Qatar providing a vital link into Doha’s fast growing Lusail City development with 5.4km dual four-lane expressway. Ashghal, Qatar’s Public Works Authority, are funding the scheme and have appointed Hyundai Engineering and Construction as the construction contractor for the D&B works.

Microtunneling for the North Canal, the first phase of the project, commenced in November 2012 and is now nearing completion. This phase involves demolishing the current North Canal Crossing Bridge, a complex process which required the diversion of vital utility services in tight time scales. Works on the North Canal included construction of deep stormwater shafts, and tunnelling for utility, stormwater and fowl sewers. Byrne Looby’s role on the project team was delivering the detailed and conceptual design for the civil, mechanical and electrical elements on the tunnelling and associated works for Hyundai.
