Basements Conference

Oct 10, 2013

On 2nd and 3rd October Ground Engineering and New Civil Engineer held the sixth Basements and Underground Structures conference in London. The event included a pre-conference session on best practice in design and installation of basement temporary works. Byrne Looby’s UK Director, David Beadman, chaired the basement temporary works session. David has extensive experience of basement temporary works design and was one of the authors of CIRIA Report C580 Embedded Retaining Walls, which according to CIRIA is “one of the most important and influential technical guides ever published by CIRIA”.

The session included an engaging debate on the need for a holistic approach for basement design. The discussion covered the need for permanent works consultants to consider temporary works and the need for Main Contractors to co-ordinate sub-contractors’ designs. As part of the discussion on guidance documentation the group discussed the difficulties with designing temporary works to the Eurocode standards. The need for training was also covered with particular importance given to the need for Graduate Engineers’ training to include site experience to gain full understanding of the complexity and considerations that need to be taken into account in temporary works design.
