Sep 10, 2013

The French Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (CFMS) hosted the 18th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (18th ICSMGE) at the Paris International Conference Centre (Palais des Congrès) from Monday 2 to Friday 6 September 2013.

More than 770 papers were submitted for the conference from 70 Member Societies. The conference took place over 4 days with an impressive 28 discussion sessions with 6 papers being reviewed in each. Maurice Ryan from Byrne Looby Partners attended and presented a paper titled Deep excavation in Irish glacial deposits, co-authored with Michael Looby and Mike Long of UCD.

The paper discuss the development of more efficient designs and in particular greater use of cantilever walls and less stiff systems with smaller piles and the reduction of propping requirements for the walls used in deep excavations in Irish glacial deposits.
