Walton-on-Thames

Waterside Drive

ByrneLooby provided full civil and structural design for this new leisure facility on this Thames-side site in Walton-on-Thames. It comprises an eight-lane athletics track, two full-size all-weather football pitches, practice pitches and a clubhouse/ grandstand. The facility is on the site of a former gravel pit backfilled as an uncontrolled tip. Ground improvement comprised excavation, sorting and replacing soils to provide a stable base for the track and pitches whilst the clubhouse was piled. The work was undertaken for Elmbridge Borough Council as a design and build contract with Willmott Dixon under the iESE framework. The scheme was submitted for planning in February 2015 with completion in the summer of 2017.

ByrneLooby designed the new clubhouse with a braced steel frame supporting the roof and precast first floor. Foundations are driven piles taken through the fill to the underlying London Clay. Surface water is attenuated in a drainage layer beneath the track and pitches before discharging to the Thames.
