STV 4 & 5, Teeside

value engineering was required for this project's success

ByrneLooby provided the specialist foundation design for the main building and waste bunker for the extension of this residual waste to energy facility.

The extension works involve the construction of two new waste lines – STV 4 and 5 – in a separate facility on the existing site. The building includes a waste bunker which required a 6.5m excavation to construct.

We provided the pile design for the main building and secant pile retaining wall surrounding the waste bunker. To gauge the scope for saving installation time and materials, we value engineered our solution in response to pile tests on site.

As works progressed, we were further engaged by our client to design a number of temporary works for the main building.

Scope of Project

  • Specialist foundation design for the extension of this residual waste facility.
  • Designs included the pile design for the main building and secant pile retaining wall for the 6.5m excavation of the waste bunker.
  • Two sets of test piles were installed to gauge the scope for reduction of installation times and materials. The first was in accordance with Eurocode 7 while the second was shortened.
  • Design of a number of temporary works for the construction of the main building.
