ByrneLooby designed the solar panel frames and foundations for a range of solar farms on agricultural land throughout the UK.

The solar farms ranged in capacity from 5 and 20GW of electricity and our responsibilities included supervising the ground investigation as well as designing the foundations and solar panel framing solutions.

A key challenge of the project due to the number of solar panels involved was to develop foundation and frame solutions which were economic, robust and easy to install.

We value engineered our pile designs allowing our client savings of time and materials and developed a number of frame options which allowed us to determine the most economical solution following close consultation with our client for each site.

Scope of project

  • Geotechnical design for a number of solar farms on agricultural land ranging in size from 5 to 20Gw.
  • Role encompassed the ground investigation, design of the panel foundations and design of the solar panel frames.
  • Performed options assessments of possible foundation and framing solutions to determine the most economical solution.
  • Worked proactively in the GI phase to target resources to unusual areas ensuring that only one phase of GI was necessary.
