M7 Widening and Sallins Bypass

M7 Widening and Sallins Bypass

Ireland’s M7 Motorway stretches 200km from coast to coast, linking Dublin to major cities in the west, M9/Waterford, M8/Cork and M7 Limerick. It is a critical transport vein, one of the most heavily used motorways in Ireland with currently 78,000 vehicles per day. To meet ever increasing traffic demands, the M7 required essential improvements and upgrades on particular sections of the motorway. An infrastructure group, Colas joined forces with leading local construction company, SIAC to form an International team consisting of National and Global expertise to deliver this large Irish road scheme, to upgrade the M7 motorway. As part of the scheme, delivery includes a new 3.7km Bypass including an interchange with the M7. A third lane of traffic will stretch 13.5 km long in both directions with five new bridges. The completion of the overall project is expected in April 2020.

Our Role

Our geotechnical engineers at Ayesa in Dublin acted as the geotechnical temporary works designers to the main contractor. Ayesa were responsible for the geosynthetic reinforced and un-reinforced temporary working platforms designs, which had to allow for the operation of the heavy construction plant including bored piling rigs and 600t crawler cranes. Works also included replacing and relocating the existing ramps at Junction 10, Naas South to the main Naas Newbridge dual carriageway. A new interchange construction at Osberstown, between Junctions 9 and 10 which will be a new designated Junction 9a. Ayesa provided bridge abutment designs for five temporary bailey access bridges and slope stability assessments for working platforms adjacent to all river banks.
