King Abdulazziz Airport

detailed design was key for the success of this project

ByrneLooby designed the reinforced concrete Ground Service Equipment (GSE) tunnel which will link the new passenger terminal to the main facilities at the airport.

The 710m long tunnel runs under the sensitive central runway and associated taxiways. It is a two road tunnel designed to carry airside vehicles with a height of 15m and a width of 25m.

Our detailed design of the RC tunnel box incorporated not just the structural design of the tunnel but also the temporary excavations and the production of the earthworks specification to facilitate the tunnel’s construction.

A key challenge was the development of a permanent groundwater lowering system to future-proof against potential future rises in groundwater levels in the vicinity of the site. As the project entered the construction phase, we were involved in the supervision of works on site.

Scope of Project

  • Detailed design of the GSE tunnel at King Abdulaziz Airport.
  • Involved in the design, specification and supervision of the 710m long RC tunnel.
  • Our role included the design of temporary excavations, specifications of earthworks and assessment of temporary dewatering requirements.
  • Developed a permanent groundwater lowering system to future-proof for further development in close proximity to the site.
  • Scoped, supervised and interpreted the ground investigation and pump tests for the tunnel design.
