Cardiff Area Signalling Renewal

INCREASING THE RELIABILITY AND CAPACITY OF THE CARDIFF AND VALLEY RAIL NETWORK WERE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT'S SUCCESS

The aim of the Cardiff Area Signalling Renewal (CASR) project was to improve station entrances, add new platforms and upgrade track and signalling in order to increase the reliability and capacity of the Cardiff and Valleys rail network in the UK. The project required ByrneLooby to design the pad foundations for the installation of new signalling posts, location cabinets and relocatable equipment boxes.

The project required small scale engineering but due to existing services on site, limited available space and issues with local topography, it proved to be complex. ByrneLooby attended Inter Disciplinary Check (IDC) meetings with the client and assisted in ensuring the designs were approved. It was necessary to coordinate the movement of the track with the signal sighting and existing services, therefore ByrneLooby were required to coordinate with all parties involved and worked to complete and present a design that would be acceptable to all stakeholders.

Unforeseen developments created delays with tight time constraints being put in place as a result. By implementing an effective client interface and flexible design options, ByrneLooby were able to provide the optimum solution for the client in the time allocated.

STAFF INSIGHT

“This was the first big project I worked on as an engineering graduate so it was all a learning experience for me. The team I worked with was great, they guided me through every aspect of Network Rail Procedures and general design procedures as well. I gained confidence that I could manage a sizable project myself without too much intervention and I feel this will benefit me on projects in the future.”
