Ham Yard

overcoming this projects tight constraints was key for it's success

ByrneLooby carried out the detailed design of the secant pile embedded retaining wall to accommodate the 9.5m deep basement for this new hotel in central London.

The site located next to Piccadilly theatre has been disused for over 40 years and this project proposes to breath new life in into the area through the construction of 90 bedroom hotel complete with a range of leisure, shopping and dining facilities.

Our retaining wall design succeeded in meeting tight constraints for deflections associated with the site’s close proximity to Piccadilly Theatre and we were further engaged to provide the a number of temporary works including the temporary propping associated with the retaining wall and a temporary sheet piled cofferdam type arrangement to protect an existing structure in the centre of the site as the scheme progressed.

Scope of Project

  • Design of a secant pile retaining wall for a 9.5m basement for a new hotel in central London.
  • Role included the design of all temporary works for retaining wall which consisted of high and low level propping to the secant piles and a number of associated temporary works.
  • Designs met tight constraints associated with sensitive surrounding buildings.
  • A key challenge was to ensure and efficient and buildable construction sequence which accommodated the dig levels and temporary works associated with the retention of the existing substructure.
