ByrneLooby was appointed by Silvertown properties to provide a full structural engineering service for this extension to an existing Victorian building. After ByrneLooby’s initial structural appraisal and feasibility study had confirmed that the building had sufficient capacity for the additional floor, we undertook detailed design of the new works which comprised timber floors on steel beams taken back to the side walls. A number of the beams were sectioned to reduce their weight for installation.

The original design was for residential use but during the process this was upgraded to allow for office loading. This change required increasing steel beam weights and removed a main central bracing wall. Additional bracing was designed in the short wall panels between glazed units.
